Myth 1: "Fake it, til you make it"

The phrase “fake it ’til you make it” is often thrown around as advice to boost confidence — but for athletes, it creates a fragile mindset. 

Pretending to be confident may work for a moment, but it builds an identity on shaky ground. Over time, it disconnects athletes from what’s real and teaches them to mask doubt instead of work through it.

The Harm It Does:
Creates surface-level confidence that cracks under pressure or adversity

Teaches disconnection from emotion — athletes suppress instead of understand what they're feeling

Leads to imposter syndrome — the deeper they "fake it," the more they feel like a fraud

Myth 2: "Mindset Is Just Positive Thinking"

A lot of athletes — and even coaches — confuse mindset training with simply “staying positive.” 

But mindset isn’t about putting a smile over a struggle. When athletes believe they have to always be upbeat or optimistic, they lose access to the real tools that help them regulate under pressure. Positivity has its place — but it’s not a strategy.

The Harm It Does:
Invalidates real emotions — athletes start to feel broken when they’re frustrated, nervous, or upset

Creates avoidance — instead of addressing pressure, they push it down and hope it disappears

Builds mental weakness disguised as motivation — because the moment things get hard, the fake positivity collapses

Myth 3: “Waiting Until Something Goes Wrong to Train the Mind”

Too often, mindset training is treated like a rescue tool — something athletes turn to only after a slump, mistake, or mental crash. 

But by waiting until something breaks, we miss the opportunity to build real resilience. Just like the body, the mind needs consistent reps — not emergency fixes.

The Harm It Does:
Creates reactive athletes — they only seek growth when they're already in a hole

Builds fear around failure — mistakes become emergencies instead of learning opportunities

Delays real confidence — because they never get the reps before pressure hits
